Miss Universe Pia Wurtzbach Dethroned After Confirmed Pregnancy

1 Apr 2016, New York -- Miss Universe 2016 Pia Wurtzbach was stripped of her crown on Thursday after officials said she is confirmed to be pregnant.

Pia will no longer represent the Miss Universe title. She won the crown four months ago in a very controversial moment with the host, Steve Harvey, misannouncing the winner as Colombia, represented by Adriana Gutierrez.

Adriana was crowned the new Miss Universe today, replacing the dethroned Miss Philippines who was sacked for "failing in her duties" amid rumours of pregnancy.

There were no gushing tears, bouquets or bittersweet kisses from rivals, but Adriana did get a crown and even managed to sashay briefly down a tiny catwalk erected in New York.

Miss Colombia was "very special", MUO said, and a "huge crowd favourite" during the competition here in the US where she finished first runner-up.

According to reports in the US media, there were rumblings within the Miss Universe Organisation that Pia, who had put on some weight since winning the title, was said to be pregnant.

With all the controversy surrounding Wurtzbach, the Colombian Gutierrez was sidelined at times during today's 're-crowning' ceremony and sometimes had to rely on questions from Miss Universe Organisation staff planted in the audience.

Gutierrez confessed that she had not got to know Wurtzbach well because of the "language barrier."

"I don't really have that much to say about her ... but I'm very happy to be taking over this job," said Adriana, who will keep the title for the next eight months.

And with that, we'd like to greet you with....
